Costume Appropriation

I believe that all of these costumes are a huge offense to those they are trying to imitate. Not only does it undermine these cultures as being exotic and out of the ordinary, but a lot of these outfits and costumes have a deeper meaning even to the very material they are made of. They aren’t just some cheap piece of cosmetic that you can just put on and pretend that you are part of that culture. I personally haven’t had any problems with costumes, maybe because I was too young to understand or the people around me are very culturally aware. But I can't even be angry, a lot of these people are not trying to offend these people but weren't taught the differences. It's not like in a school they focus on what's wrong about every single culture, it's just that people aren't taught therefore don't understand what is an appropriate thing to wear and an inappropriate thing to wear. The only way to stop people from wearing offensive costumes is to teach them at a young age. Teaching kids at school about different cultures will make the future more accepting. The older people who don't understand will have to learn from social media or from other people, or suffer the wrath of social media.

Everyone needs to be aware of what their costume says, and what they mean to other people and cultures.

  1. Emmit I agree with what you said about how some Halloween costumes could be offensive as they try to imitate another culture, but end up mocking them. Most people that wear those costumes aren’t trying to offend the other culture, but it happens anyways, so we can’t really get mad. I agree that this should be taught to younger students so they’ll grow older knowing what costume is acceptable and what isn’t. Another step would be to get costume stores to stop selling them in the first place, so less people would wear them.
